      Harriet Stone was born in Oxford, CT in 1814, daughter of Dr Noah Stone; in 1832 she married Stephen Hubbell in the Oxford United Church of Christ. Her book is based on her life including 12 years in East Avon, CT. Her husband was forced out of this church by parishioners who recognized themselves and thought the book derogatory. She died in 1856 in N. Stonington where her husband was serving.

      Bassett grew up in Oxford and Derby, CT and was educated at Central CT College and its first Black graduate. He was tapped as ambassador to Haiti.

      Shelton, born in Woodbury, CT, was the founder of Sanford, FL where a museum housing his library was built in 1957. He served as US Minister to Belgium (1861-69). He is buried in Long Hill Cemetery in Shelton, CT.
